Sibling Spotlight Lewter

Introduce yourselves:

Paige: Hi! I’m Paige and I am a 24 year old from the small town of Ahoskie, North Carolina. You’ve probably never heard of it but just know I’m a good ole country girl! I am a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University. Go Aggies! I currently live in Maryland and work for the United States Navy as an Electrical Engineer. I loooove children and I volunteer with them in a STEM organization that I started in my community. Working with kids and helping to provide them with opportunities are one of my passions and someday I hope to make that into a career.

I also love to dance and you can catch me break out into a move at the most random of moments. Traveling and experiencing other cultures is something I enjoy, especially different types of foods. I love to eat!  I can be very outgoing at times but I’m really shy.

Michele: Hey Guys! My name is Michele Lewter. I am 23 years old from a small town in Eastern North Carolina known as Ahoskie. I am a proud Alumnus of North Carolina A&T State University. Class of 2012!! I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Engineering and I am currently pursing my Masters in Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resource Management.

I would describe myself as a very playful, caring, person who is on a mission to make a difference in the lives of others. I believe in enjoying every moment of your life and doing what makes you the happiest.  In my free time, I enjoy working out, online shopping, and enjoying my time with family and friends. I also adore painting my nails and experimenting with different nail polishes. I wouldn’t call myself a home body but I will make sure that I am at home in time to watch my favorite television sitcoms and favorite reality shows!

Describe your relationship with your sister:

Paige: My sister and I are 13 months apart and I’m the oldest. People often mistake us for twins but I don’t see it at all. Our relationship is rather multi-faceted. I can be bossy, and since I was little I’ve always tried to tell Michele what to do or make sure that she is doing what she needs to do. I do it because I love her. She often calls me her “second mom”.

Besides that we are also great friends! We travel together, look to each other for fashion advice, are starting a business venture, and I know she can keep my secrets. We have the best time together and I always know that she is someone who I can count on. I still look after my sister like I did when we were little. “Nobody better mess with her” lol! Only I can.

Michele: My relationship with my sister has grown so much over the years. Even though we were only 13 months apart it sometimes seemed like we were 5 to 10 years apart. You could say she was very mature at an early age, where I was quite the goof ball lol. I would describe my sister Paige as quite the bossy older sister, even though I out grew her in height by about the age of 4 lol. She was always stating what things I should do and even what she wanted me to wear or say. But at the end of the day, she would always make sure that I was taken care of and that I had everything I needed. Ultimately, she earned the nickname “Mom #2”. As we got older our relationship started to mature. We began to realize how much we had in common and that we could always count on one another when we needed to talk about anything as simple as school, fashion trends, or even serious personal issues.

Something that you love about your relationship with your sibling and something that you could work on (Strengths and Weaknesses):

Paige: I love that we can be open and honest with each other when it comes to giving advice or opinions. We also have this connection where we know what each other is thinking and we don’t even have to say anything. It’s kind of freaky sometimes. We can finish each other’s sentences.

Something that we can work on is arguing. I actually hate it when we argue but Michele really knows how to get to me.

Michele: I would say the strength in our relationship is being there for one another, no matter the circumstance. We have that assurance that whatever we talk about can be said in confidence and that we won’t judge each other for it. We also have this connection where we know exactly what the other is thinking without anything being said lol. Along with our number of inside jokes and our strange sayings, when we get together we are sure a have a blast.  A potential weakness that we may have is communication.  Because we are so outspoken to one another, sometimes our words may come off a little offensive towards one another.  But since we have both noticed that we do this to one another, I find the issue working itself out.

Through the years was there an older/younger sister complex? Any funny stories?

Paige: I am the oldest sister but at some point while we were growing up, Michele seemed to have surpassed me in height. It’s sort of embarrassing, but I know she could beat me up if we ever got into a real fight. I recall one day at my grandma’s house we were arguing. She hit me hard enough to knock a tooth out. (It was already loose lol!) I don’t even think she meant to hit me that hard as she too was shocked. I will never forget that! It wasn’t funny to me then but it is now. We had to have been in elementary school.

Michele: There wasn’t an older/younger sister complex that I can remember, but there were definitely funny stories between us. Too many to discuss. One that sticks out to me is when we were probably around the age of 7. At the time, I wanted to be just like my older sister so much, that I even decided to chew bubble gum when she did. Sounds silly right. So I decided to chew gun before going to bed and eventually fell asleep. So in the morning I wake up and head to the kitchen for breakfast to my sister pointing and laughing at my hair. Yes the gum was all in my hair. I cried and cried while getting a few pieces of my hair snipped here and there. Smh… until now Paige probably doesn’t know that that whole incident happened because I wanted to be like my big sister lol.

Any advice to other siblings on maintaining a healthy relationship:

Paige: It’s inevitable that siblings are going to have disagreements. My advice is to not hold grudges. Communicate, talk it out, and make up. When it’s all said and done, as siblings you want to the best for each other.

Michele: Communicate. Even though you may both go through different phases in your life and may live completely different lifestyles, it is important to continue to maintain contact. Over the years, I have heard lots of older/younger sister relationships crumble due to miscommunication and not communicating at all. We were always told by our parents to look out for one another and to always put family first.

Why is it so important to have a good friendship/relationship with your sister?

Paige: Having a good friendship and relationship with my sister is very important. Our grandmother always used to tell us “Ya’ll are sisters, you aren’t supposed to fight. You are supposed to look out for one another.” We may have not understood that then but we certainly do now. Sometimes in life when you go through certain things, your sister is the only one who is there to understand what you are going through and to support you. When you have no one else to go to, your sister is that person you go to and lean on for support and comfort. Sisters have special connection and bond. It’s nothing else like it. Michele has been there for me and I have been there for her.

She’s also a really great shopping partner! 🙂

Michele: I believe that having a good relationship with your sister is extremely important. Watching both of my parents maintain strong relationships with their siblings has always been amazing to me. They have shown me that no matter how far apart you may be, a simple phone call, text or email can make all the difference. It is also important that we maintain a strong relationship for the sake of our children in the future so that they can understand the importance of family and that at the end of the day family should and will always be by your side.
